Dear Esteemed AALA/Teamsters 2010 Members,

As we continue to face the devastation caused by the multiple fires affecting our beloved city of Los Angeles, I want to take a moment to acknowledge the profound impact this crisis is having on our district families. Our thoughts and prayers are with our employees, teachers, parents, and students who have lost their homes to these uncontrollable fires. During this time, please know that you are in our hearts, and we are here to support each other.

AALA/Teamsters 2010 has established a relief fund to assist our members during this challenging time. I have already reached out to those I am aware of who may be in need. If you are personally affected or know someone who needs assistance, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

In the spirit of collaboration, I have continued to work closely with our labor partners, particularly UTLA, and have been in communication with labor relations and Board members as inquiries come in from the field. As your president, my commitment remains to listen, advocate, and take action on your behalf. Below are some of the critical questions we continue to address:

  • What is the plan for recovery and the reopening of schools?
  • What steps are being taken to ensure safety standards are in place before employees and students return?
  • When will communications be sent out to all parties involved, especially principals, parents, and the community at large?

Here’s a brief update on what I know at this moment:

  1. The Principal meeting scheduled for Wednesday, January 15, 2025, has been canceled.
  2. DIBELS and iReady testing deadlines have been extended to February 7, 2025. If conditions change further, we will adapt accordingly.
  3. Payroll is working on providing information regarding protocols and procedures for reporting time.
  4. The Board of Education is currently in discussions concerning safety factors and the safe reopening of schools.
  5. Budget development meetings that were scheduled for next week have been postponed to the following week.
  6. Special Education Appeals will receive an extension – more information coming.

As we are in the midst of an emergency crisis, please stay vigilant for district communications regarding the potential reopening of schools and instructional plans for Monday, January 13, 2025. Additionally, it’s crucial that we all work together to ensure our staff and school families are kept informed about what is happening at each school site.

I ask for your continued leadership and dedication in these extraordinary times. Please be ready to send out BBC messages as requested by the district, even if the request comes on a Sunday. Your support in these efforts ensures that we keep everyone informed and prepared.

I deeply value each and every one of you. The work we do is not just a job—it’s the work of the heart. I will continue to keep you updated as I receive important information that directly impacts you and your communities.

In Solidarity and Unwavering Resolve,

Maria
President, AALA/Teamsters 2010
